Rwanda’s economy is based on agriculture with more than 90% of the population engaged in subsistence agriculture. The agricultural sector contributes 43% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 90% of her export earnings. The contribution to GDP made by cash crops is 8% while food crops make 23%.

The origins of the RSSP project lie in the post-1994 (war/genocide) recovery period in Rwanda. This was a period of massive change, with the state dealing with huge reconstruction, refugee, and security problems, while rebuilding its own operational capacities.

Objective

Rainfall in season 2009B is close to the long-term average. Cumulative rainfall from January 1st to May 10th, 2009, came to a total of 387 mm, which represents 17% of the 434 mm long term average for the same period (Figure1).  The long-term average is calculated for the period 1920 – 1980..
